Introduction
Regulatory requirements such as California Rule 21 or the CSIP-Aus mandates require certain set of DER’s to be connected to Utility DERMS, ADMS or SCADA Servers, for monitoring and control to ensure safety and reliability of the grid. While IEEE 1547-2018 specifies IEEE 2030.5, DNP3 and Modbus as the three approved protocols at the Local Interface for DER’s, the utility interconnection typically uses DNP3 or IEEE 2030.5. DNP3 is ideal for real-time control of a small number of very large MW DER generators, IEEE 2030.5 is the preferred protocol for interconnection, monitoring and control, given its security profile, ability to scale to millions of nodes, model support, support for web technology support over HTTP, its ability to support scheduling and its ability to model DER’s in multiple ways including aggregator, proxy, direct client etc., IEEE 2030.5 allows for profile support like CSIP and CSIP-Aus, that enable a subset of protocol features that align with specific jurisdictional use cases to be implemented and certified.
ASE / Kalkitech DER products based on Kalki.IO DataHub OT middleware, are scalable and secure products with support for more than 80+ protocols, with proven integration with AWS, Azure and with a connector and REST/API interfaces for enterprise integration or cloud integration.

ASE’s Telemetry Gateways can communicate with the DER devices on-site, e.g., smart inverter or Energy Management System (EMS) using any of the communication interfaces defined in IEEE 1547-2018 (Modbus, DNP3, and IEEE 2030.5). Common Smart Inverter Profile (CSIP) certified IEEE 2030.5 client and aggregator client support in the gateway helps the utility to monitor and control any DER locations regardless of the communication capability of the field devices, thereby reducing overall interconnection costs.
Control Management
IEEE2030.5 client can be configured on three modes, fully interpreted, partially interpreted and no- interpretation for handing the DER controls. On no-interpretation mode aggregator shall rely on the controls directly to the DER devices or downstream gateways and let the DER device/gateway handle the control prioritization, scheduling primacy and default control handling. In Partial interpretation mode, aggregator client passes the scheduling and default control to downstream and handle the control primacy and prioritization at the aggregator side. In fully interpretation mode aggregator client does all the handling of DER control including scheduling primacy, default control handing. Full interpretation would be required for devices which are connected on telemetry protocols like DNP3.0 or SunSpec directly from field.
Logic programming
COT support logic engine based on basic logic module and IEC61131 based logic programming. Logic engine can be configured to prioratize dispatch commands based on inputs from Market, ISO and utility requirement. Logics can be used implement local decision loops like command interlock. Configuration utility provide flexbile user interface to configure the logic based on structured text, functional block, or ladder logics as required for the technician.
Limited generation profile (LGP) can be enabled in the COT for annual /monthly/biweeky/weekly dispatch schdule.
Industry Compliance
CSIP
California Smart Inverter Profile (CSIP) is a set of technical requirements and communication protocols developed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for smart inverters installed in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. CSIP aims to enhance the reliability and stability of the electrical grid by enabling better integration of solar power. By complying with CSIP, COT gateway and aggregator ensures seamless communication between the smart inverter and the utility grid, enabling advanced functionalities such as voltage and frequency regulation, grid support during disturbances, and remote monitoring and control.
CSIP AUS
CSIP AUS (California Smart Inverter Profile Australian) is an extension of the CSIP standards specifically tailored for utility-scale solar PV systems in Australia. CSIP AUS incorporates additional requirements and specifications necessary for the Australian grid infrastructure and regulatory framework. COT products serves as a comprehensive solution, functioning as a product support aggregator and gateway that adheres to CSIP AUS.
PV system owners, developers and operators in California and Australia can benefit from improved grid integration, optimized performance, and enhanced overall system reliability.
Centralized Management
COT gateways come with comprehensive device management service through ASE/Kalkitech’s Kalki.io device management solution. Kalki.io provides a secure centralized device management service what can be used to update gateway firmware, security patches, license, and configuration files remotely. It can used as central repository for configuration, settings and logs retrieved from the field gateways. Kalki.io can also be useful for continuous monitoring of events and alarms from the gateway and helps user to take necessary actions on time thereby minimizing downtime and truck rolls.
Secure Remote Access
Kalkitech remote device maintenance access service provides a role-based remote configuration and management access for field devices such as inverters, DER controllers, storage controllers, or meters by extending connectivity from the programming port of the field device with the engineering and configuration tool situated at a remote location over a public/ private network on a secured link.
